Hayaa’

Hayaa’ encompasses modesty, shyness, bashfulness, self-respect, honour, shame. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, every religion has a character and the character of Islam is hayaa’ (modesty).” (Ibn Mājah 4182; Sahih according to Al-Albani). The Messenger of Allah, peace and blesssings be upon him, was also reported to have said: ‘Among the early prophetic teachings that have reached the people is this: if you do not feel shame, then do what you wish.’ (al-Bukhari 2484)

Hayaa’ is one of the branches of imaan (faith; al-Bukhari). Modesty and faith come together. If one of the two is missing, so is the other (Shu’ab al-Imān 7211; Sahih according to Al-Suyuti). From the goodness of hayaa’ is that a believer feels shy of doing anything displeasing to Allah, with the belief that he will have to answer to all of his deeds. And if a believer does, says, or sees anything wrong, he feels extremely bad and embarrassed of what he has done. This instills a high degree of consciousness of Allah (taqwa) and that is what strengthens a believer’s commitment to His obedience. Sa’id ibn Yazid reported: He said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, “Advise me.” The Prophet said, “I advise you to be modest in front of Allah Almighty as you would be modest in front of a righteous man among your people.” (al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 5539; Sahih according to Al-Albani).

Bloom

Sometimes I catch myself wishing that I was a child again. Wide-eyed, young, unburdened by my mistakes and without sin. But if I hadn’t grown, I would never have known my Lord. My Kind, Loving, Generous Lord. His Love. His Forgiveness. His Mercy – its vastness, its depth. And for this, I am so grateful.

My Merciful Lord. So many times I’ve stumbled, grumbled, and forgotten His favours. Sinning with the very blessings He has given me. Yet He is always with me, guiding me, showering me with His Blessings, embracing me in His Grace. And for all of this, I am so grateful.

I want to do better, be better.

Indeed those who believe and do good…

be it male or female (4:124), Allah will guide them because of their faith (10:9), answer their prayers and increase for them from His bounty (42:26). Allah will certainly absolve them of their sins (29:7) and admit them among the righteous (29:9). They are the best of creation (98:7) and will have the highest of ranks (20:75). Allah will bestow for them affection (19:96) and admit them into His Mercy. For them is forgiveness, a generous provision and a great, never-ending reward (5:9; 22:50; 34:4; 3:57; 18:2; 35:7; 41:8, 95:6). Their efforts will not be denied nor discounted (21:94), and they will not fear injustice nor deprivation (20:112). That is the absolute triumph (45:30).

Joy awaits them and an excellent place of return (13:29). Paradise (7:42). Lofty dwellings with cool shade, flowing rivers, as entertainment and accommodation (4:57; 10:9; 18:107; 22:14; 22:56; 29:58; 31:8; 47:12). For them is whatever they wish for (42:22). They will have pure spouses, and be adorned with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments will be of silk (4:57; 22:23). They will abide therein, forever (2:25; 7:42; 2:82; 4:122). Indeed, all these, for those who have believed and done good.

Removed from their hearts is any bitterness or ill feeling, and they will say, “All praise and thanks be to Allah, who has guided us to this. Had Allah not guided us, we would never have found the way.” (7:43)
